A Look at the Nielsen 2011 Social Media Report

In: Strategy Insights

Nielsen, which is solely responsible for getting your favorite TV show cancelled because they let the networks know how few people were watching, have increasingly focused their hard-hitting data collection on social networking. Check out their State of the Media: Social Media Report for Q3 2011 for the latest research confirming everything you suspected all along. It's both eye opening and informative, though it will do nothing to bring back Arrested Development. Here are the highlights:

  • Social networks and blogs are still the top destination online
  • Females and 18-34 year olds are the most active social networkers
  • Men are more likely to visit LinkedIn or Wikia
  • Americans spend more time of Facebook than any other Web brand
  • Mobile social media use is on the rise
  • Social networking app use is up 30% from a year ago
  • Mobile social networking by people 55 years and up has more than doubled from last year
  • More women view videos on social networks, but men watch longer
  • Active social media users are influential
  • Tumblr tripled its unique US audience in the past year
  • Social networks and blogs are the top online destinations in all countries
