In February of 2002, inside a small office building in South Charlotte, Banks Wilson started on a quest to build his own design firm aimed at “Redesigning Communication.” After realizing agency work wasn’t for him, Wilson knew starting his own firm was a logical choice and Union (formerly Studiobanks) was born.
Wilson attended the University of North Carolina at Charlotte concentrating his studies in graphic design. Upon graduation in the spring of 2001, Wilson felt his talents were underutilized working in a corporate environment. “I wanted an opportunity to display some of my creative abilities and working on my own provided the chance,” said Wilson. “I had always aspired to start my own design firm and felt that the time had come.”
With business growing, Wilson realized the necessity for talent and looked to an old friend. While at UNCC Wilson established a relationship with fellow designer Robbie Player and knew Player’s skills were the perfect fit for Union.
“Asking Robbie to join Union was one of the best decision’s I’ve made,” quote Wilson. “I knew his talents and strengths were different than my own and understood that he would make an immediate impact on our business.”
In only three years, Union has established themselves as a powerhouse in Charlotte’s graphic design circles. The studio’s customer base is continuously growing with companies such as Square D, UNCC, Media-Comm, SEM, Southeast Capital Associates and Carolina Nightlife in the fold. With this success they have added another member to team with the hiring of Ben Visser, a design graduate of Winthrop University. “Ben joining the team has rounded out are abilities,” explained Wilson. “We’ve grown quicker than I would have ever imagined and without the knowledge of Robbie and Ben I don’t think Union would be where it is today.”
This young, ambitious group of designers has developed some of the most impressive design work in Charlotte and is now showcasing their talents through their redeveloped website www.studiobanks.com. Since the inception of the company, designing websites has been a primary source of business. With that in mind, the company’s new site incorporates a display of their capabilities through an energetic feel, competent functionality and clear organization.
“Union.co lets us quickly showcase our abilities towards potential customers,” said Wilson. “Our business is based on a visual response and we feel our new site design creates an outlet to show what we can do.” Union focus on “Redesigning Communication” has led to unparalleled success for its customers. Isn’t it time you let this upstart design firm work for you?
